In choosing the right doula for you however, there are many other important factors which you may need to take into consideration. As your doula will be sharing and supporting you during one of the most amazing and powerful life experiences that you will encounter, it is important that you feel comfortable and secure in her company. You should be able to communicate freely with her and know that you will be listened to and have your wishes respected at all times.

The best way to check if a particular doula is the right one for you is to meet them. We at the Association recommend that you meet at least two doulas if possible, so that you feel confident with your choice. Usually women have a very good idea after only one meeting if a doula will be useful for them. Having a baby should be a very instinctive process and so should choosing your doula. If it feels right you will know, but if you have any doubts at all, even over minor issues then listen to your instinct and choose a different doula.

Remember that during your interview with her, your doula should listen as well as talk. She is there to support you on your journey whatever your birthing wishes or circumstances. Faith in birth, one woman at a time.

How do you think you can help me to have the type of birth I would like to have?
What training and additional courses have you undertaken?
How much experience have you had as a doula?
Can you tell me about your own birthing experiences?
Why did you decide to become a doula?
Are you a member of an accredited association?
Can you describe the service that you provide?
Do you use a contract?
Do you have a back-up doula?
Can I meet her?
What do you enjoy most about being a doula?

All Doula Association of Ireland members have completed an approved training programme and are bound by a common code of ethics and disciplinary procedure. This means that women and their families looking to engage the services of a doula can do so with added confidence in respect of our registered members.
